Green Design for Data Centers

Some news in the world of Green IT today. First, TechWorld UK reports that a new start-up, Viridity, has software it claims can “assess the impact of technologies such as virtualisation and de-duplication, allow chargeback based on power usage, identify equipment that can be turned off or moved, and rebalancing the IT load to reduce power costs and limit over-provisioning.”

The interesting and opinionated Viridity blog linked to an article in the Sacramento Bee on a new advancement in data center cooling, which is being used for a new data center called the McClellan project. This “free cooling” technology is truly cutting edge–it involves opening the windows.

“‘Outside air is an absolute must now,’ said Bob Seese, chief architect at Advanced Data Centers of San Francisco, developer of the McClellan project.”

The EPA estimates that 1.5 percent of the nation’s electricity consumption in 2006 was from data centers, a figure that could double by 2011. All food for thought as we seek to reduce our storage footprint.
