Cisco launched its Unified Computing System today, and the storage blog-o-tweet-osphere is abuzz with frenzied speculation as to what exactly this will mean. In addition to making the announcement via the traditional press release channels, the CEOs of NetApp and EMC released videos this morning on YouTube. Clearly, they were prerecordered videos–not made at the Cisco event where the UCS was announced–and they did garner a few jeers for their canned quality. However, this blogger at least found them useful as a way of multitasking–I could both listen to and read about the news at the same time using multiple windows.
If nothing else, this announcement is a reminder of how fast news travels–and the extent to which we are in a participatory environment these days. Within minutes, a Twitter discussion began at hash tag #UCS. Also, Marc Farley at StorageRap has done a nice job aggregating the news posts on the subject, which he promises to keep updating as the day wears on.
To his running list, I’ll add a few more that caught my eye:
Ben Worthen, WSJ – Cisco’s Data Center Love Fest
Stephen Foskett, Gestalt IT – Cisco Enters Virtual Server Hardware Market
Robin Harris, Storage Mojo – Cisco’s Unified Computing System
