Babel Fish on the Way?

Warning: this post really has nothing to do with storage. It’s instead about something that sounds really cool, and hey, who can argue with that?

Computerworld is comparing it to the universal translator in Star Trek. It might also be called a “babel fish-like” device. In any case, the latest invention is news to all of us who love to travel and hate the feeling of being unable to communicate with the natives.

The software, which can run on a smartphone device such as a BlackBerry, iPhone or other device, is a major step forward in voice recognition and translation. A video on the Computerworld page shows the universal translator in action, successfully turning an English phrase into Arabic. It is both a speech and text translator, which leverages the power of a cloud-based platform.

The article quotes the CEO of the company that developed the software, Adeeb Shanaa: “You can say anything you want and it will translate it very, very well … I would put it close to very close to actually having a perfectly fluent translator with you in your pocket.”

Truly inspiring technology. And of course the next question on all of our minds — when do we get teleportation?
