What Recession? IT Still Hiring

Turn off the TV. Stop checking Yahoo Finance. Byte & Switch reports today that IT jobs are still a “relatively safe haven” from the recession.

Citing a survey by Robert Half, B&S found that CIOs plan a 2 percent hiring increase in the coming quarter. This is slower growth than in past years, but still–it’s a far cry from the massive cuts in other industries. The most sought after positions? Desktop support ranked number one, followed by network administration specialists, generally for LANs and WANs. Internet and intranet development are another fast-growing area.

Meanwhile, a popular hash tag on Twitter is #TweetMyJOBS, where there are listings for everything from .NET developers to nurses to laborers.

Any technology that helps reduce IT costs has a much better shot at weathering this recession. For example, at Ocarina–which recently raised a second, $20 million funding round–there are several open positions, including three in engineering:

Another important trait in any recession, in my opinion, is a positive, can-do attitude. High tech folks are often more able to manage their fear of a meltdown–after all, many of us have been through it before, some of us more than once. Where do you see the bright spots in this economy?
